SA56202TW
The spindle motor did not turn, the sled did not move, and even the CD tray did not come out. A quick look at the block diagram in the service manual indicated that the SA56202 IC (disc, tray, sled, motor driver) was responsible for driving these components. This IC receives many different voltages through its various pins, and they all seemed to be present.
Using an oscilloscope, I checked for control signals, which were present, however the IC seemed to be non-responsive, without any output.
When I removed the heatsink membrane I noticed that the IC, and its heatsink membrane had marks indicating overheating. There was a tiny crack on the IC and discolouration of one of the pins, which indicated failure of the component.
The SA56202 is a driver chip, which controls the high-current electromechanical devices such as the motors. Unfortunately this IC is wafer thin and does not dissipate power very well resulting in failure. I was able to remove the faulty IC using my rework station and soldered a new replacement within minutes, and that solved the problem!
