Panasonic SA-BTT270 Heatsink and Fan

The Panasonic SA-BTT270 has an active cooling system with a tiny heatsink and fan assembly, and its proper operation is vital for this unit. After many years of use, these get clogged up restricting the flow of air and resulting in the unit overheating and displaying ERROR F61. In this ultra-slim compact design, airflow is very critical. I had cleaned most of the dust off the heatsink fins, but did not spot the dust wedged in the tiny space between the fan and the heatsink. Hence the unit would work fine for a while and then show the error message usually when I turn up the volume. Looking online, I found many blogs mentioning the error and to check the speaker wires but none with a clear solution. Fortunately, the service manual troubleshooting section had the solution all along. I checked the voltage produced by the thermal diode D5802, and it was evident that it was prematurely triggering thermal protection. I re-seated D5802 with fresh thermal compound, and re-soldered its terminals just to be thorough.

Here you can see that tiny gap between the fan and heatsink where dust may remain wedged in.
