LP2980-2V5 - RG3

Raspberry Pi Board - RG3 Voltage Regulator

The LP2980-2V5 is a 2.5 V regulator marked as RG3 on the Raspberry Pi revision 2 board. It powers the DAC subsystem within the Broadcom BCM2835 processor, through the DAC_2V5 pin. A DAC usually has a dedicated power rail in order to remain free and clean of digital noise. The diagram above shows the location of the LP2980-2V5 - RG3 voltage regulator on the Raspberry Pi board.

According to the LP2980-2V5 Datasheet this is a 50 mA low dropout voltage regulator in a SOT-23 package used for battery-powered applications.

Its input pin 1 has an absolute maximum rating of 16 V, after which it will turn into toast. Its maximum junction temperature rating is +125 °C. It has built-in over-temperature and over-current protection, and therefore it is a hardy little regulator.
