Toshiba TA7122 Preamplifier IC

The TA7122 is a preamplifier IC manufactured by the Toshiba Corporation of Japan. This very early audio chip was the equivalent of three transistors but had some very impressive specifications. Due to its low noise figure of 0.8 µV rms, and low harmonic distortion of 1 %, this IC was ideal for use in preamplifier applications. It could operate on a voltage (Vcc) of up to 42 V, had a power dissipation of 400 mW, and had a high open loop gain of 92 dB. Toshiba have always been innovators in IC technology, and created some of the best audio integrated circuits found in vintage walkmans.

Here is a typical tape recorder preamplifier circuit diagram. This type of amplifier is useful for signals from an audio head.
RIAA Phono Preamplifier

Due to the interesting specifications of the TA7112 IC, I believe it would make a wonderful RIAA phono preamplifier for a record player/turntable. Unfortunately it is no longer manufactured, however if I can find two for a stereo application, then it may be a project for the future.
