CFS-2050 Audio Design

The Sony CFS-2050 has a single piece printed circuit board that consists of the audio circuitry on the left side and radio circuitry on the right side. To gain access to it, one has to remove the tape transport mechanism. In this unit, I had to gain access to the reverse side of the mechanism to change the drive belts, and therefore I had a look at the circuitry. They are using a very popular chipset used in many high-end radio cassettes of that era.

The TA8229K is a stereo power amplifier manufactured by the Toshiba Corporation. It is capable of providing 4.6-watts output through a 4 Ω load, when Vcc is 12 V. This IC requires very few external components to operate and is ideal for hobby use in a small amplifier project.

The TA8142AP is a stereo recording and playback preamplifier IC manufactured by the Toshiba Corporation. This IC is usually used in double cassette systems as it consists of four preamplifiers.
