Morphy Richards RC-220 Radio Cassette Recorder

RC-220

The RC 220 (also written as RC-220) is a radio cassette recorder manufactured by the Morphy Richards Corporation in Hong Kong. It has a 3-band radio with LW, MW, and FM reception, a cassette recorder with built-in microphone, high/low tone switch, telescopic aerial, and one earphone socket. The tape transport mechanism has a metal chassis, with metal pushbutton mechanism. The loudspeaker rating is 1-watt 8-Ω, and it produces a nice deep bass and tone.

Although it was a cheap-and-cheerful part of their range, It has some good things going for it such as a transistorised radio circuit that is sensitive and works well. The tape recorder section uses the TA7628P integrated circuit (IC), which is an amplifier system for cassette tape recorders, manufactured by Toshiba Corporation.

These units would have been mass-constructed by hand using cheap labour, but today it is a very fine example of electronics manufacturing. These radio cassettes must be rare, as I have not seen many online. If there is one going cheap, then it is certainly worth having for the collection.
