Philips EL-3302 Tape Transport

The Philips EL-3302 tape transport mechanism has an alloy chassis that is extremely well designed and fabricated. The idea of the audio head, and erase head on a sliding platform was very progressive for the time, and future models of cassette recorders employed the same principle.

The erase head always engages into the compact cassette, even when not recording, because the record switch controls the bias.

Tape Transport

The pinch roller was not the best of designs because the bevelled edges increased the chances of tape creep. I usually replaced it with a flat pinch roller, which performed much better.

I love some of their vintage designs; however, some of their modern products are extremely well made as well.

Spool Mechanism

When the fast forward and rewind functions became weak and slow, the rubber surfaces around the tape winding mechanism required replacing.
