Zenith Royal 3000-1 Wavemagnet

Zenith Royal 3000-1 Wavemagnet

The wavemagnet (also known as wave magnet) is simply a fancy name for a ferrite rod and coil assembly usually found in radios for the reception of long wave (LW) and medium wave (MW) bands. It is a fixed loop antenna housed in a plastic enclosure outside the radio cabinet. This is because the cabinet is metal which blocks incoming radio signals, and ferrite rods do not operate so well when placed near metal.

When repairing radios, I usually use another radio known as a crystal radio as a probe. It is simple to make and requires a germanium diode and crystal earpiece. You can use this type of probe to hear the signal coming into the ferrite coil (wave magnet) and trace it all the way into the RF and IF stages.
