Technics SA-GX370

The Technics SA-GX370 was an AV control stereo receiver amplifier manufactured by the Matsushita Electric Industrial Corporation in Japan. There were various versions and the SA-GX370EB-K was a black coloured one for the UK market. There was also the SA-GX370E for the European markets, and SA-GX370EG for German and Italian markets. The design of these Dolby surround receivers came from a previous model SA-GX470E with more powerful audio output. Both principle models used the SVI3204B power amplifier integrated circuit (IC) which produced an extremely clear sound with very desirable bass and treble. The table below shows models in the SA-GX series and their front channel output.

ModelFront Channel Output (watts)
SA-GX7702 × 100 W
SA-GX6702 × 80 W
SA-GX4702 × 55 W
SA-GX3702 × 40 W
SA-G90572 × 60 W
Volume Knob

For my amplifier "expert" friends in the UK, you will be surprised to learn that the volume knob is servo controlled consisting of a DC motor that rotates it. You can see photographs of the mechanism in the following pages of this multi-page article.

These old amplifiers are starting to become rare because there are very few people willing to repair them when they break. In addition, replacement power amplifier ICs are getting rare and expensive and therefore it is not always cost effective to repair them. Bearing in mind that a replacement SVI3204B IC is extremely expensive, a broken one displaying "OVERLOAD", might cost approximately ten pounds. However, a good working amplifier might be worth over a hundred pounds, but it very much depends upon the day and the knowledge the bidders have.
