Canon AV-1

Canon AV-1

The AV-1 is an aperture priority automatic exposure (AE) single lens reflex (SLR) camera manufactured by the Canon Corporation of Japan in 1979. It has an automatic electronically controlled shutter, which ensures proper exposure of the 35 mm film. This camera requires a 6 V battery in order to operate, and the manual states that the A544, 544, 4SR44, or PX28 batteries are compatible. Without the proper battery, the shutter will remain locked and appear jammed. The winder will also appear stuck and will not wind. This camera has the Canon breech-lock mount and is compatible with the Canon FD range of lenses. The FD type provides full aperture AE, whilst the FL type provides stopped-down AE.

SLR 35 mm Camera

If you are looking to buy the Canon AV-1, then it is usually for sale on eBay, and the price can vary depending upon the condition. A camera body with a jammed shutter may sell for a few pounds, whilst a camera in mint condition with the lens could fetch considerably more money. If it comes with accessories and the original box, then the price would be even more.

Even though everyone has moved on to digital cameras, the value of mechanical film cameras should remain steady due to interest from hobbyists and collectors. Mechanical cameras were hand assembled, and a lot of thought and engineering went into their construction. Those with some intelligence will respect their true value and worth.
